Certified electrician completing continuing education courses online

California certified electricians must complete 32 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) every three years to maintain and renew their state Electrician Certification. This requirement is enforced by the Division of Industrial Relations (DIR) and ensures electricians stay current with National Electrical Code (NEC) updates and safety standards.

California Electrical Training (CET) is a state-approved CEU provider offering all courses 100% online in both English and Spanish. Our courses are designed for working electricians — study at your own pace, from anywhere, and complete your renewal requirements without disrupting your work schedule.

Who Needs CEUs?

All certified electricians in California must complete continuing education to renew their Electrician Certification card. This applies to every electrician who has passed the California Electrician Certification Exam, regardless of specialty or employer.

The 32 hours of CEU must be completed through a provider approved by the Division of Industrial Relations (DIR). Courses must cover topics relevant to the electrical trade, including NEC code updates, safety standards, electrical theory, and California-specific regulations.

What Happens If You Don't Complete Your CEUs?

If your CEU hours are not completed before your certification expires, you cannot legally work as a certified electrician in California. Working without a valid certification can result in fines and legal consequences for both the electrician and the employer.

To avoid lapses, we recommend starting your CEU courses at least 3-6 months before your certification expiration date. CET's online format makes it easy to complete your hours on your own schedule.
